ALL SHOOK UP WORKSHOP
SCENES AND SETTINGS
Time: A 24-hour period, during the summer of 1955
Place: A small you-never-heard-of-it town somewhere in the Midwest
Natalie Haller/Ed—(alto with belt) A young woman and an excellent mechanic. She’s much more at home in greasy overalls than a dress.
Chad—(rock and roll, high baritone) A great-lookin’, motorcyclin’, guitar-playin’, leather-jacketed roustabout (ner-do-well)
Jim Haller—(baritone) Natalie’s widowed father. Middle-aged and messy, he still longs for his wife.
Sylvia—(alto belt with huge range) The no-nonsense, African-American owner of Sylvia’s Honky Tonk.
Lorraine—(alto) Sylvia’s teenage daughter. Pretty, smart and a total romantic.
Dennis—(tenor) An awkward young man. He aspires to be a dentist.
Miss Sandra—(alto with low notes) The beautiful, intellectual caretaker of the town’s museum.
Mayor Matilda Hyde—(soprano) The town’s very conservative mayor.
Dean Hyde—(tenor) Matilda’s teenage son. He has spent his youth at military boarding schools and he has never disobeyed his mother.
Sheriff Earl—(baritone) The law in town and a man of not many words. He loyally follows the Mayor wherever she goes.
Ensemble – The Ensemble will play numerous singing/dancing roles in the show. The inmates, barflies, statues, devilettes, angels, townspeople, guys, gals, etc will all be cast from the ensemble, as well as a few small speaking roles. The ensemble or members of the ensemble perform in about 15 of the musical acts and provide location and action for a majority of the scenes. We are looking for ensemble members who move well, although there can be roles for those who just want to sing and have fun on stage with minimal to no dance.
Did you know…All Shook Up is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night; or What You Will which was composed in either 1600 or 1601 as the last of his three "mature comedies" (the other two being Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It). Like his early comedies, Twelfth Night is essentially a celebration of romantic love and can be viewed as a traditional romantic comedy. The play has many of the elements common to Elizabethan romantic comedy, including the devices of mistaken identity, separated twins, and gender-crossing disguise, and its plot revolves around overcoming obstacles to "true" love. Twelfth Night also features a subplot in the self-inflated "sour" or "blocking" character of Malvolio. Indeed, while Twelfth Night concludes with tandem weddings, Shakespeare also speaks about the madness of love.
